Sananga and Hapé (also called Rapé) are two powerful Amazonian plant medicines often used in the context of Kambo ceremonies, as well as in other indigenous healing traditions. These sacred tools are known for their ability to support emotional release, clear energetic blockages, and deepen one’s spiritual connection. Whether used on their own or in conjunction with Kambo, they serve as potent allies on the healing path.

Sananga

Sananga is a traditional eye medicine made from the roots and bark of the Tabernaemontana shrub. Indigenous tribes of the Amazon, particularly in Brazil and Peru, have long used Sananga to cleanse the mind, body, and spirit.

When applied to the eyes, Sananga produces an intense burning sensation lasting just a few minutes — but the effects go far beyond the physical. This powerful medicine is believed to:

  • Clear blockages from the third eye and emotional body
  • Release suppressed emotions such as rage, fear, or grief
  • Sharpen intuition and inner vision
  • Enhance spiritual perception and dreamwork
  • Improve night vision and physical sight

In the jungle, Sananga is traditionally used by hunters before night hunts to sharpen their vision and heighten awareness of their surroundings. This speaks to the plant’s ability to open both literal and spiritual sight, helping us see clearly — within and without.

In ceremonial work, Sananga is often used before Kambo to prepare the energetic body, calm the mind, and invite deeper surrender.

Hapé (Rapé)

Hapé (pronounced ha-PAY), also known as Rapé, is a sacred tobacco-based snuff made from Nicotiana rustica and various other medicinal plants, roots, and ashes. It is traditionally administered in ceremony by blowing it into each nostril using a tepi or kuripe, accompanied by prayer and deep intention.

The immediate effects of Hapé are grounding, centering, and clarifying. This medicine has been used for centuries to:

  • Quiet the mental chatter and bring stillness
  • Release emotional heaviness or stuck energy
  • Connect with the breath and present moment
  • Activate the pineal gland and enhance spiritual receptivity
  • Support energetic, emotional, and physical detox

In the context of Kambo, Hapé is often used before or after ceremony to help center the participant, facilitate integration, and bring the nervous system back into balance.
